Genesis 1 — Overview

Genesis 1 is the very first chapter of the whole Bible. It tells us how God made everything — light and darkness, sky and sea, land and plants, sun and moon, fish and birds and animals — and last of all, people! Every time God made something He said, 'It is good.' On the sixth day God made people in His very own image. Then He looked at everything He had made and said it was very good. This chapter shows us that God is powerful, creative, and that the world He made is a wonderful gift.

God made everything — and it is all very good! You were made by God, in His image.

Genesis 1 is foundational theology for young children. Key themes: (1) Creation ex nihilo — God made everything from nothing, out of the power of His word alone. Help children see that this means God is unlike anything else in creation. (2) The repeated refrain 'it was good' — creation is not an accident or a mistake. It is intentional, beautiful, and valued by God. (3) The image of God (v.27) — every human being carries the imago Dei. This is the basis for human dignity, kindness to others, and why every person matters. For young children: you can explore creativity together — God made the world, and when we make things, draw things, or care for things, we are reflecting His image.

Go outside this week and notice something beautiful God made. Say 'thank You, God' for it. Draw or make something creative as a family — and remember: when you create, you are reflecting the God who made everything.
