The smoking furnace and burning lamp are visible manifestations of God's presence — like the pillar of cloud and fire in Exodus. Only God passes between the pieces — Abram does not. In a normal covenant ceremony, both parties would walk through. Here, God alone walks through, taking the entire obligation of the covenant upon Himself. This is unconditional grace.
Memory phrase: God sealed His promise by taking all the responsibility.
Talk about it: Only God walked through the animal pieces — Abram did not. What does it mean that God made this promise all by Himself?
Prayer: God, thank You that Your covenant with me rests entirely on You — not on how well I keep it. Your faithfulness holds what mine cannot.
