Matthew 8 — Overview

Coming down from the mountain, Jesus heals a leper with a touch, heals the centurion's servant (and marvels at the Gentile's faith), heals Peter's mother-in-law and a great crowd at evening, responds to two would-be followers about the cost of discipleship, stills the storm on the Sea of Galilee, and heals two demon-possessed men in the country of the Gadarenes — casting the demons into a herd of pigs.

Jesus has power over every kind of sickness, every kind of fear, and every kind of dark power — and He uses that power with great love and gentleness.

This chapter is a showcase of Jesus' authority — over disease (leper, paralysis, fever), creation (the storm), and spiritual forces (the Gadarene demoniacs). The centurion episode is particularly rich: a Gentile military officer shows greater faith than anyone in Israel, recognising authority structures because he himself operates under them. This is a perfect opportunity to talk about faith and trust. The storm stilling can be linked to for older children. Handle the Gadarene demons age-appropriately: Jesus has power over anything dark or scary.

Nothing is too hard for Jesus. When we feel scared or sick or things feel out of control, we can ask Jesus for help — He has power over everything.
