thirteen cities: Here there are only eleven enumerated; but two more are added in the book of Joshua, Juttah and Gibeon, which make thirteen. Joshua 10:2, Joshua 15:55, Joshua 21:16-17; 1 Chronicles 14:16; None of the versions give the full number of names, though they all give the whole sum of thirteen; and it is probable that these two cities had been destroyed and lay in ruins when this book was written, and hence were not enumerated.
