"Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock." (Matthew 7:24) Imagine you are building a house in a place where the wind blows hard and the rain floods the ground.
One man decides to build his house on a large pile of sand. It is easy to dig, and the sand feels soft. He finishes quickly. But when the storm comes, the sand moves. It shifts under the house, and the walls begin to crack.
The house is only as strong as the ground beneath it. Another man finds a massive, solid rock. It is hard and difficult to work with, but he clears the dirt away until his house sits directly on the stone.
When the storm hits, the wind howls and the water rises, but the house does not move. The rock does not shift. In your life with God, your "feelings" and "opinions" are like the sand. Some days you feel holy; other days you feel like a failure.
Some days the world tells you one thing is true; the next day, the world changes its mind. If you build your confidence on these things, your faith will always be cracking. To have a lifelong faith, you must move your house onto the Rock.
The Rock is the Word of God. The Bible is not just a book of good advice; it is the finished, final word from the Creator of the universe. When God says, "I will never leave you," that is a solid stone.
When He says, "Your sins are forgiven," that is a foundation that cannot move. Even when you feel "shaky" inside, you can look down at the foundation and see that the Rock hasn't moved an inch. Your safety depends on the strength of the Rock you stand on, not on how hard you are gripping it with your hands.
Digging Deeper
Theologically, we call this the Authority of Scripture . This means the Bible is the "final court of appeal" for every area of a Christian’s life. We believe in Sola Scriptura , which means that while teachers, feelings, and traditions can be helpful, only the Bible is the perfect, error-free rule that governs our faith.
When we say the Word is "Inspired," we mean it is Theopneustos —literally "God-breathed" (2 Timothy 3:16). Because God cannot lie and cannot change, His breathed-out Word is the only thing in this world that is truly unshakable.
When your heart says one thing but the Bible says another, the disciple always trusts the Bible. Reflect on this: When you are worried about your future or your standing with God, do you look for a "feeling" to comfort you, or do you look for a "Promise" in the Bible?
Feelings come from you, but Promises come from the Rock. 👣 Take a Step Don't build your life on the shifting sand of your emotions or the world's opinions. Build on the Rock of God's Word. When the storms of life hit, your house will stand—not because you are strong, but because the Rock beneath you cannot be moved.
