"For it is by grace you have been saved... it is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast." (Ephesians 2:8-9) Imagine you are working in a field under the hot sun.
You dig, plant, and water for 12 hours straight. Your back hurts and your hands are blistered. At the end of the day, the owner comes and hands you money. You take the money proudly because you worked for it.
You earned it. That is a Wage . Now, imagine it is your birthday. Your father calls you into the living room and hands you the keys to a brand new house. You did not work for it. You did not sweat for it.
You just receive it. You cannot say, "I earned this." You can only say, "Thank you." That is a Gift . Many people treat God like a boss, not a Father. They think, "If I work hard enough—if I pray enough, give enough, and stop sinning—then God will owe me heaven."
They are looking for a Wage. But the Bible says salvation is a Gift. This is the hardest part for our human pride to accept. You cannot work for a gift; otherwise, it is not a gift anymore! Grace means God gives you what you do not deserve.
If your father gave you that house, and you tried to pay him $5 for it, it would be an insult. It would suggest his gift was cheap. The only proper response to the Gospel is to stop working for your salvation and start resting in His love.
We do good things now, not to get the gift, but to say "Thank you" for the gift we already have.
Digging Deeper
This brings us to the difference between Justification and Sanctification . Justification (The Gift): This is God declaring you righteous. It happens in a moment. It is perfect and complete. You cannot be "more" justified 20 years from now than you are today.
Sanctification (The Growth): This is you becoming more like Jesus in your daily actions. This takes a lifetime and is often messy. The mistake many Christians make is mixing these two up. They look at their messy life (Sanctification) and doubt their standing with God (Justification).
Never base your security on your performance. Your performance will go up and down, but your Justification is set in stone because it depends on Jesus, not you. Reflect on this: Do you feel "more saved" on days when you behave well, and "less saved" on days when you struggle?
That is a sign you are still thinking in terms of "Wages." How can you remind yourself today that the house is already yours? 👣 Take a Step Religion says "I obey, therefore I am accepted." The Gospel says "I am accepted, therefore I obey."
The order matters. If you are working for salvation, you are a slave. If you are working from salvation, you are a son. Rest in the "Done."
