"God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God." (2 Corinthians 5:21) Imagine two boys standing in front of a strict School Principal. The first boy has been playing in the mud.
His school uniform is torn, filthy, and smells bad. He has broken every rule and deserves to be punished. The second boy is the Prince—the son of the King. His uniform is perfectly white, starched, and clean.
He has never disobeyed. The Principal is about to punish the first boy. But suddenly, the Prince steps forward and says, "Wait. Let us trade." The Prince takes off his clean, white shirt and puts it on the dirty boy.
Then, the Prince takes the dirty, smelly shirt and puts it on himself. When the Principal looks at the first boy now, he sees the clean shirt. So, he honors him. When the Principal looks at the Prince, he sees the dirt.
So, the Prince takes the punishment that the first boy deserved. This is exactly what happened on the Cross. It is called the "Great Exchange." We are like the dirty boy. We cannot wash our own shirts.
No matter how much "good work" we do, the stain of sin is too deep. We need a new shirt entirely. On the Cross, Jesus didn't just forgive you; He swapped places with you. He took your "dirty shirt"—your sin, your shame, and your mistakes—and He wore them as if they were His own.
He was punished for them. In exchange, He gave you His "Royal Robe"—His perfection and His righteousness. Now, when God looks at you, He does not see your past mistakes. He sees the perfection of His Son.
You are clean today, not because you washed yourself, but because you are wearing Jesus.
Digging Deeper
Theologically, this "swap" is called Double Imputation . Imputation #1: Our sin was credited to Jesus (Propitiation). He was treated as a sinner, though He was holy. Imputation #2: Jesus' righteousness was credited to us (Justification).
We are treated as righteous, though we are sinners. Many religions teach that you must become righteous internally before God accepts you. The Gospel teaches that you are declared righteous legally (because of Jesus) so that you can become righteous internally over time.
You are safe before you are fixed. Reflect on this: If God looks at you right now and sees the "Royal Robe" of Jesus, why do you still feel guilty about your past? What would change about your day tomorrow if you truly believed you were wearing that robe?
👣 Take a Step Jesus didn't just clean you; He traded places with you. He wore your dirty rags so you could wear His royal robe. You are accepted today not because of your behavior, but because of your new clothes.
