The River and the Swamp

If you have never given to God, start the flow. Don't worry about the amount yet, focus on the habit. This Sunday, give something to your local church. Break the grip of greed. Be a river, not a swamp.

"You cannot serve both God and money." () "Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse... Test me in this... and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven." () In Israel, there are two major bodies of water fueled by the same river (the Jordan).

The Sea of Galilee: It is beautiful and full of fish. Trees grow along its banks. Why? Because the river flows into it, and then flows out of it. It is a conduit. The Dead Sea: It is lifeless. No fish can survive there.

The water smells. Why? Because the river flows into it, but nothing flows out . It hoards every drop it gets. Because it only takes, it becomes toxic. This is the picture of your financial life. God gives you money (resources).

If you keep everything you earn for yourself—if you just build a bigger bank account and buy more stuff—you become like the Swamp. Your spiritual life becomes stagnant. The grip of money starts to choke your heart.

But if you are a River—if you let God's blessings flow into you and then flow through you to others—you stay alive, fresh, and useful. This is the principle of Stewardship. A "Steward" is not an Owner; he is a Manager.

The World says: "I earned this money. It is mine." The Christian says: "God gave me the ability to earn this. It is His. I am just managing it for Him." When you view yourself as a delivery truck driver for God's resources, you don't stress about the cargo.

You just ask, "Boss, where do you want me to drop this off?"

Digging Deeper

Theologically, how do we handle money practically? The Bible points to Tithing and Generosity . The Tithe (The "Training Wheels"): The word literally means "Tenth" (10%). In the Old Testament, God commanded His people to give the first 10% of their harvest back to Him.

It was a reminder that He owned the land. Many Christians use this as a starting point. It says, "God, you are first, not last." Generosity (The Goal): In the New Testament, we are called to be "cheerful givers" (2 Cor 9:7).

This goes beyond a math percentage. It is a heart posture that says, "I want to bless others because God blessed me." Money is the #1 competitor for your heart. God doesn't need your money (He owns the cattle on a thousand hills); He wants your trust.

Tithing is the only place in the Bible where God says, "Test me." He dares you to trust Him with your finances and see if He doesn't take care of you. Reflect on this: Look at your bank statement from last month.

It tells the true story of your priorities. If a stranger read it, would they conclude that you love God, or that you love clothes, food, and hobbies? 👣 Take a Step If you have never given to God, start the flow.

Don't worry about the amount yet, focus on the habit. This Sunday, give something to your local church. Break the grip of greed. Be a river, not a swamp.
