"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight." (Proverbs 3:5-6) Imagine a ship captain trying to steer a large vessel into a harbor at night.
The channel is narrow, and there are dangerous rocks on both sides hidden by the dark water. How does he know he is safe? On the shore, there are three specific lights set up on posts. If the captain sees three separate lights, he knows he is off course and in danger.
If he steers until the three lights line up perfectly to look like one single light , he knows he is exactly in the center of the deep channel. He can move forward with confidence. Finding "Godβs Will" is like aligning those three lights.
We often agonize over decisions: "Should I take this job? Should I marry this person? Should I move to a new city?" We look for writing in the sky. But God usually guides us by aligning three specific things in our lives.
We call this the "Bullseye of Discerning." The Word (Scripture): This is the first and brightest light. God will never lead you to do something that contradicts the Bible. If a "voice" tells you to date a non-believer or cheat on your taxes, that is not God.
The Spirit (Inner Witness): This is the internal "traffic light." Do you feel a deep, settling peace (Green Light)? Or do you feel a scratching, restless "check" in your gut (Red Light)? The Counsel (Wise People): This is the external confirmation.
What do godly mentors, pastors, or mature friends say? If everyone who loves Jesus thinks your idea is crazy, you are probably the one who is wrong. When the Bible allows it, the Spirit prompts it, and the Wise confirm itβyou have alignment.
You can throttle up and go.
Digging Deeper
(Tap to expand) Theologically, it helps to distinguish between the two "Wills" of God. God's Sovereign Will (Secret): This is God's plan for the universe. It includes everything that happens. You cannot miss this, and you don't need to "find" it.
It just happens. God's Moral Will (Revealed): This is what God has told us to do (e.g., "Be holy," "Give thanks," "Flee sexual immorality"). Most of the time, we ask God for a map of the future (Sovereign Will): "God, where will I live in 10 years?"
God replies with a compass for today (Moral Will): "I won't tell you the future yet. But I will tell you to be honest and faithful today." The Freedom Principle: If a decision is not sinful (Scripture), and you have prayed (Spirit) and sought advice (Counsel), you are often free to just choose .
God is not a micromanager who gets angry if you pick the wrong cereal. He wants you to use the wisdom He gave you. Reflect on this: Think of a decision you are facing. Run it through the grid: Is it biblical?
Do I have peace? What do my wise friends say? If you have 2 out of 3, wait. Don't crash the ship. π£ Take a Step God doesn't usually shout; He guides. If you are stuck, check your three lights. If they aren't lined up, the safest thing to do is drift; wait and pray.
But if they are aligned, stop hesitating. Trust the Captain and pull into the harbor.
