"My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. They are not of the world, even as I am not of it." (John 17:15-16)Imagine a massive ship sailing in the middle of the ocean.
Scenario A: The ship is in the water. This is good. A ship is designed for the water; it is the only place it can function. If you put a ship in a dry dock or a desert, it is useless. Scenario B: The water is in the ship.
This is a disaster. If the ocean breaches the hull and gets inside, the ship sinks. The rule of the ship is simple: The ship must be in the ocean, but the ocean must not be in the ship. This is the Christian’s relationship with Culture .
Christians have often made two opposing mistakes: The Fortress (Isolation): We are so afraid of the ocean getting in that we take the ship out of the water. We hide in a "Christian Bubble"—Christian schools, Christian music, Christian coffee shops.
We never interact with non-believers. We are safe, but we are useless. The Chameleon (Assimilation): We want so badly to be "relevant" and "cool" that we let the ocean in. We look, talk, and act exactly like the culture.
We adopt the world's views on money, sex, and power. We are in the water, but we have sunk. Jesus calls us to the Third Way : To be deeply embedded in the culture (loving our neighbors, working in secular jobs, creating art), yet distinctly different in our values.
We are "In the world, but not of it."
Digging Deeper
(Tap to expand)Theologically, this balance is often described as Faithful Presence . Separatism: "The world is evil; run away." (The error of the Monk). Syncretism: "The world is good; copy it." (The error of the Liberal).
Transformation: "The world is broken; bring salt and light." (The way of Jesus). Jeremiah 29:7 gives us the blueprint. When the Israelites were exiled in Babylon (a pagan, godless city), they wanted to leave.
But God said:"Seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper."We are "Exiles" in this world. We don't burn the city down, and we don't worship the city.
We serve the city while worshipping a different King.Reflect on this:Which error do you lean toward? Bubble: Do you have any non-Christian friends? When was the last time you had a real conversation with someone who completely disagrees with you?
Blend: If you were put on trial for being a Christian, would there be enough difference in your lifestyle to convict you, or do you look exactly like your secular neighbors? 👣 Take a Step You cannot be "Salt of the Earth" if you stay in the salt shaker.
Action: This week, engage with the culture intentionally. Watch a popular movie, read a bestseller, or go to a community event but do it with "Jesus Glasses" on. Ask: "What is good here that I can affirm?
What is broken here that needs the Gospel?"
