The Thief and the Lightning

Live with "The End" in mind. Imagine you knew—with 100% certainty—that Jesus was returning exactly 30 days from today. Write down three things you would change about your schedule or priorities for this next month

The Thief and the Lightning "For as lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man." () "You know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night."

() Imagine you are sitting in your living room late at night. The house is dark. You are asleep on the couch. Suddenly, a Thief breaks a window. You didn't schedule it. You didn't receive a calendar invite.

It happens in an instant, without warning, while the world is sleeping. Now, imagine standing outside in a thunderstorm. A massive bolt of Lightning cracks across the sky. You don't need a news anchor to tell you it happened.

You don't need to check your phone to confirm it. Everyone, everywhere, sees it at the exact same moment. It is undeniable. This is how the Bible describes the Second Coming of Jesus. It holds two conflicting realities together: Like a Thief (The Timing): It will be unexpected.

No one knows the day or the hour. If anyone gives you a specific date on a calendar, they are lying. It will interrupt "business as usual." Like Lightning (The Event): It will be unmistakable. When Jesus came the first time, He came in secret (a baby in a manger).

When He comes the second time, He comes in glory. Every eye will see Him. We live in the "in-between." Many people live as if Jesus is never coming back. They get comfortable, they drift, and they sleep.

Others live in panic, obsessed with decoding charts and timelines. Jesus calls us to a third option: Alertness. We are like servants waiting for the Master to return from a wedding banquet. We don't know if He will arrive at 9 PM or 4 AM, so we keep the lights on and the house clean.

We live ready.

Digging Deeper

Theologically, the Greek word for the Second Coming is Parousia. In the ancient Roman world, a Parousia was the arrival of the Emperor to a city. It was a massive public event. The citizens would rush out of the city gates to meet the Emperor on the road and then welcome him back into the city to reign.

The Rapture vs. The Return: Christians have debated the details for centuries (Pre-Tribulation, Post-Tribulation, etc.), but the core hope is the same: History has a finish line. The world is not spinning endlessly in circles.

It is moving toward a destination. First Coming: Jesus came as a Lawyer (Advocate) to pay for our sins. Second Coming: Jesus comes as a Judge to fix the world. If He doesn't come back, justice is never done.

Hitler gets away with it. Cancer wins. Death wins. The Second Coming is the guarantee that evil does not have the last word. Reflect on this: If Jesus came back in the next 10 minutes, would you be relieved or terrified?

Would you be ashamed of what you are doing right now? Would you regret the conversations you never had with your lost family members? How you feel about His return reveals the state of your relationship with Him.

👣 Take a Step Live with "The End" in mind. Action: Imagine you knew—with 100% certainty—that Jesus was returning exactly 30 days from today. Write down three things you would change about your schedule or priorities for this next month.

(e.g., "I would forgive my brother," "I would stop worrying about my retirement account," "I would share the Gospel with my neighbor"). Look at the list. Why aren't you doing those things now?
