The Garden City

Stop viewing Earth as a "waiting room" for Heaven. View it as a "fixer-upper" that God is in the process of renovating. Do something purely "physical" today to glorify God.

"Then I saw 'a new heaven and a new earth,' for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away... I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God." () Imagine a masterpiece painting—the Mona Lisa.

Now imagine a vandal breaks into the museum. He slashes the canvas with a knife and throws mud on it. The painting is ruined. When the Master Artist arrives, what does he do? Does he throw the canvas in the trash and say, "Oh well, I'll just paint a ghost picture in the air instead"?

No. That would let the vandal win. It would admit that the damage was stronger than the artist. Instead, the Master carefully removes the mud. He stitches the canvas back together. He restores the colors.

He makes the painting even more beautiful than it was before. He redeems it. This is the biblical view of Heaven . Most Christians have a "Gnostic" view of eternity. We think: "The world is bad. One day, God will destroy it, and we will fly away to float on clouds and play harps forever as ghosts."

That is not what the Bible teaches. The Bible begins in a Garden (Genesis) and ends in a Garden City (Revelation). God is not going to destroy the earth; He is going to restore it. Salvation is not an escape plan from creation; it is the rescue operation of creation.

We don't go "up" to Heaven forever; Heaven comes "down" to Earth (Rev 21:2). We will have physical bodies (like Jesus’ resurrected body). We will eat, we will hug, we will work, and we will explore a physical universe that has been scrubbed clean of sin, death, and cancer.

Digging Deeper

Theologically, we must distinguish between the Intermediate State and the Eternal State . Intermediate State (Now): When a believer dies today, their soul goes to be with Jesus. This is "Heaven." It is a place of rest and joy.

But it is not the end. They are "unclothed" (spirits without bodies). They are waiting. Eternal State (Future): When Jesus returns, He brings the Resurrection . He reunites our souls with new, imperishable physical bodies.

He merges Heaven and Earth. This is the "New Earth." Why does this matter? If you think eternity is just "floating on clouds," it sounds boring. Who wants to sit in a church service for a billion years?

But if eternity is a New Earth, it means all the good things God created—music, food, friendship, mountains, science, art—will be redeemed. We will have eternity to explore the mind of God through the works of His hands.

The "boring" parts of earth (sin, decay, boredom) will be gone; the good parts will be amplified. Reflect on this: Do you treat the physical world like trash because "it's all gonna burn anyway"? That is bad theology.

God loves matter. He invented it. He became a Human (matter) to save it. How you treat your body and the planet should reflect the fact that God intends to keep them. 👣 Take a Step Stop viewing Earth as a "waiting room" for Heaven.

View it as a "fixer-upper" that God is in the process of renovating. Action: Do something purely "physical" today to glorify God. Eat a great meal and savor every bite. Go for a walk and admire a tree.

Thank God that He didn't just make you a spirit, but a living soul in a body. Practice enjoying the New Earth today.
