"Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path." (Psalm 119:105) "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight."
(Proverbs 3:5-6)Imagine you are hiking through a dense forest at night. You ask God for a Floodlight . You want a massive beam that lights up the next 10 miles of the trail. You want to see the destination, the turns, the dangers, and the resting spots all at once.
You want certainty. But God usually hands you a Flashlight (or an oil lamp, in the Psalmist's day).A lamp only shines light on the ground right in front of your toes. It shows you exactly enough for the next step, but it leaves everything else in shadow.
To take the second step, you must take the first one. To see further, you must keep moving. This is how God's Guidance works. We obsess over the "Big Picture" ( "Who should I marry?" "What career should I choose?"
). We are terrified that if we make one wrong turn, we will "miss" God's will and ruin our lives forever. But God is not a GPS that shouts "Recalculating!" if you make a mistake. He is a Shepherd. He doesn't usually give us the 10-Year Plan because if He did, we wouldn't need Faith.
We would just need a calendar. He gives us just enough light for today so that we have to stay close to Him to find the way for tomorrow.
Digging Deeper
(Tap to expand)Theologically, we must distinguish between God's Hidden Will and His Revealed Will (Deuteronomy 29:29). God's Revealed Will (The Fence): This is clearly written in the Bible. Is it God's will for me to commit adultery?
No. Is it God's will for me to be honest at work? Yes.Is it God's will for me to give thanks? Yes (1 Thess 5:18).You don't need to pray about these things; you just need to obey them. God's Hidden Will (The Field): These are the specific choices not in the Bible.
Should I live in Lagos or London? Should I take the job at Company A or Company B?God gives you freedom here. As long as you stay inside the "Fence" (His moral law), you are free to play in the "Field."
The Parking Lot Principle:It is hard to steer a parked car.If you want God to guide you, start moving. Do the things you know He wants (loving people, serving, praying). As you move, He will gently steer the wheel.
Reflect on this:Are you paralyzed waiting for a "Sign from Heaven" for a decision, while ignoring the clear commands God has already given you?God rarely gives fresh guidance to people who are ignoring His old guidance.
Why should He show you Step 2 if you haven't done Step 1 yet? 👣 Take a Step Stop worrying about next year; focus on next Tuesday. Action: Identify one decision you are stressing about.Ask this question: "Do I have enough light to take just the very next small step?"
(e.g., Send one email, make one phone call, fill out one application). If yes, take that step. Trust Him to light the one after that when you get there.
