"Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons?' Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!'" (Matthew 7:22-23) Imagine a pine tree in December.
We cut it down, bring it inside, and cover it with bright, shiny ornaments. We add lights, glass balls, and a big star. It looks absolutely dazzling. But here is the truth: You can take a completely dead tree and cover it in ornaments.
It looks alive and beautiful, but it has no roots. Now, imagine an apple tree in an orchard. It doesn't have flashy glass balls hanging from it. But it has apples. You cannot tie a fake apple onto a dead tree and make it grow.
Real apples only come from deep, living roots. Spiritual Gifts (Preaching, singing, leading) are the Ornaments. God gives them to you like tools. You can actually hang a great gift on a person with bad character.
Spiritual Fruit (Love, Joy, Patience, Kindness) is the Apple. It is the absolute proof of Life. It takes time to grow. It cannot be faked. We are often amazed by people with flashy Ornaments. God is looking for people with real Apples.
Don't be fooled by someone's talents if their character is rotting.
Digging Deeper
Notice that in Galatians 5, it is called the Fruit of the Spirit—singular, not plural. Love, joy, peace, patience... these are not separate items you pick and choose from. They all grow together in one cluster.
Patience is just Love waiting. Kindness is just Love reacting. Self-Control is just Love making a choice. You can have an amazing talent for singing and still be a jerk. But you cannot have the Fruit of Love and be a jerk.
Fruit is the only real test of a disciple. Reflect on this: Are you chasing Ornaments or growing Apples? Do you pray more for God to give you Talent (so people will notice you) or for Patience (so you look more like Jesus)?
👣 Take a Step Action: The Character Audit. Read Galatians 5:22-23. Pick the fruit you are struggling with the most (like Gentleness or Peace). Pray: "Lord, I don't need a new shiny gift today. I need to grow this apple.
Water my roots until I am gentle."
