devotionPsalms 1:1SILENT KILLERSsin

The Eye Roll

Cynicism feels like wisdom, but it's really just scar tissue on your soul. It takes zero effort to be a critic, but it takes massive courage to keep hoping. Learn how to get your wonder back today. πŸ‘‡

"Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked... or sit in the company of mockers." () Imagine a young child. They are full of wonder. They believe anything is possible. Now imagine an old, grumpy man sitting on a porch.

He has seen it all. He has been hurt. He trusts absolutely no one. When someone shares an exciting new idea, the child says, "Wow! That's amazing!" The old man rolls his eyes and says, "Yeah, right. That’s a scam.

It will never work." Cynicism is the Eye Roll of the soul. It is a hard, thick shell we build around our hearts to protect ourselves from being disappointed again. "The Church? They just want your money."

"True Love? It always ends in divorce." "A miracle? It's just a coincidence." Being cynical makes you feel smart. It makes you feel safe from getting hurt. But the Bible warns us not to sit with "Mockers."

Why? Because God cannot work with a cynic. Faith requires the open innocence of a child. Cynicism kills faith. It creates a numb, frozen heart that can no longer feel hope.

Digging Deeper

Cynicism is what happens when you lose your first love . When we get hurt by life or by other Christians, we create spiritual "Scar Tissue." Scar tissue is tough, but it is totally numb. It doesn't feel pain, but it also can't feel a warm hug.

Jesus said, "Unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven" (). He didn't mean you should be childish (immature); He meant you must remain childlike (trusting and full of wonder).

Reflect on this: Have you become highly sarcastic about spiritual things? Do you secretly mock people who are joyful and excited about God? That is a major warning sign. Don't let the darkness of this world put out the light in your eyes.

πŸ‘£ Take a Step Action: The Cynicism Fast. For the next 24 hours, completely refuse to say anything sarcastic or negative. If you see something you'd usually roll your eyes at, force yourself to find one genuinely good thing about it.

Practice wonder again.
