devotionMatthew 7:3THE PEACEMAKER

The Log and the Speck

It's impossible to help someone get a speck of dust out of their eye when you have a giant wooden log sticking out of yours. Judge yourself first.

"Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?" () Imagine you are trying to perform delicate eye surgery on a friend. You are holding tiny tweezers, trying to pull a tiny piece of dust ( The Speck ) out of their eye.

But you have a massive, heavy wooden telephone pole ( The Log ) sticking right out of your own face. Every single time you lean in to help them, your wooden log hits them right in the head. You are accidentally beating them up while screaming, "Hold still!

I'm just trying to help you!" This is the painful comedy of Judgment . Jesus uses this funny picture to show how absolutely ridiculous we look when we try to correct other people without fixing our own lives first.

We scream at our kids for yelling too much (The Log of Anger). We judge other people for gossiping, while we gossip about them (The Log of Slander).

Digging Deeper

This is all about your Credibility . Notice that Jesus doesn't say "Never take the speck out of their eye." He says "First take the plank out... THEN you will see clearly to remove the speck." Correcting someone in love is a good thing.

But it requires totally clear vision. If you try to correct someone while you are blinded by your own pride, you will just hurt them with your log. Reflect on this: What is the number one thing that frustrates you about other people?

(For example, "People are just so selfish"). Do a Mirror Check: Is it possible you hate that trait so much because you secretly recognize it in yourself? Usually, the sins that annoy us the most in others are the exact ones we are guilty of.

πŸ‘£ Take a Step Action: The Log Removal. Before you criticize anyone today (your spouse, a politician, your boss), stop and pause. Ask God: "Do I have a version of this exact same sin in my own heart?"

Confess your own sin first. It will make your criticism much softer, kinder, and more humble.
