"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." (2 Timothy 4:7) Imagine a Relay Race (The 4x100m). You have the fastest runner in the world. He runs an incredible lap.
He breaks the world record. But... at the end of his lap, he drops the Baton . Or he forgets to hand it to the next runner. Does his team win? No. They are disqualified. It doesn't matter how fast he ran if he didn't pass it on.
Success without a Successor is Failure. Many Christians run a great individual race. They know the Bible. They are holy. They are successful. But they never pour their life into a Timothy. They never mentor a younger person.
When they die, their wisdom dies with them. The Baton hits the ground. To "Finish Well" doesn't just mean you cross the line; it means you handed the faith to the next generation before you crossed.
Digging Deeper
In the Old Testament, almost every great leader failed at the hand-off. Joshua was great, but after he died, "another generation grew up who knew neither the Lord nor what he had done" (Judges 2:10).
The baton dropped. Eli failed to train his sons. Hezekiah failed to prepare Manasseh. Paul is the exception. He poured everything into Timothy, Titus, and Silas. He knew he was dying, but he smiled because the Baton was safe in their hands.
Your legacy is not what you did ; it's who you raised . Reflect on this: If you died today, who is carrying your Baton? Who knows how to pray because they watched you? Who knows how to love their spouse because they watched you?
If the answer is "nobody," start looking for a runner today. 👣 Take a Step Action: The Hand-Off. Invite a younger person to coffee (or lunch) this month. Don't lecture them. Ask them questions. Listen.
Simply say: "I believe in you. I want to help you run." Start the transfer.
