The Weaned Child

A baby only wants its mother for milk. A weaned child just wants its mother's presence. Are you using God for what He can give you, or do you actually just want Him?

"But I have calmed and quieted myself, I am like a weaned child with its mother; like a weaned child I am content." () Imagine a nursing infant. When the baby is hungry, it cries. The mother holds the baby and feeds it milk.

The baby loves the mother, but mostly, the baby loves the milk . Eventually, the mother has to "wean" the child (stop giving it milk so it can eat solid food). During the weaning process, the child screams.

It throws a tantrum. It thinks the mother is being cruel. But once the child is finally weaned, something beautiful happens. The child can sit on the mother's lap just to be with her. The child doesn't want her milk anymore; the child just wants Her .

Most Christians are nursing infants. We go to God constantly crying for "milk"— Fix my finances! Heal my body! Give me a promotion! If God says "Wait" or "No," we throw a spiritual tantrum. We threaten to quit reading the Bible.

Mature discipleship is the painful process of being weaned. God will sometimes withhold the blessing you are crying for, not to punish you, but to mature you. He wants to know: Do you just want His hands (what He can give you), or do you actually want His face (who He is)?

Digging Deeper

A weaned child is Content . Paul said, "I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation" (). Immature faith is transactional: "I obeyed You, so You owe me a blessing."

Mature faith is relational: "I have You, so I already have everything I need." When you stop using God as a vending machine and start treating Him as a Father, your anxiety completely disappears. Reflect on this: If God never gave you another physical blessing for the rest of your life—if He never answered another prayer for comfort—would Jesus be enough for you?

Can you sit on His lap without asking for a favor? 👣 Take a Step Action: The Prayer of Silence. Set a timer for 5 minutes today. Sit in total silence. Do not ask God for a single thing. Do not give Him a list.

Just sit in His presence and say: "I am just here to be with You."
