"Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me." (Luke 9:23) Imagine an executioner's cross. It is made of rough, splintered wood. It is heavy. It is stained with blood.
It is an instrument of absolute death. Now imagine someone takes that cross, sands the wood down until it is smooth, paints it gold, wraps it in soft velvet, and hangs it on the wall as a nice decoration.
The modern church has invented the Velvet Cross . We preach a Gospel that says: "Come to Jesus and He will make your life comfortable. He will upgrade your career. He will make you the best version of yourself."
But Jesus didn't invite us to a life-upgrade; He invited us to an execution. "Deny yourself" means you lose the right to call the shots. "Take up your cross" means you embrace suffering for His sake.
A mature disciple knows that true Christianity is highly inconvenient. It will cost you relationships. It will cost you money. It will cost you your pride. If your faith has never cost you anything, you might be carrying a Velvet Cross.
Digging Deeper
Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a pastor who was martyred for his faith, wrote: "When Christ calls a man, he bids him come and die." We have replaced the call to Die with the call to Try . We just "try" to be better people.
But God doesn't want to improve your flesh; He wants to crucify it. Galatians 2:20 says, "I have been crucified with Christ." Dead people don't get offended. Dead people don't demand their rights. Dead people don't obsess over their image.
Reflect on this: Where are you still demanding your "rights"? Your right to be respected? Your right to have a comfortable weekend? Lay it on the rough wood. Let it die. 👣 Take a Step Action: The Daily Death.
Identify one perfectly "legal" right you have today (e.g., the right to win an argument, the right to spend your free time on yourself). Voluntarily give it up for the sake of someone else. Bleed a little.
