"Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you." (John 13:14-15) Imagine a traditional corporate ladder.
At the bottom, you do the dirty work. You sweep the floors, write the code, and set up the chairs. As you climb higher, you get a bigger office. You get an assistant. People bring you coffee. The goal of earthly leadership is to reach the top so you never have to touch the dirt again.
Jesus takes the corporate ladder and flips it completely upside down. On the night before He died, knowing He had all power and authority in the universe, what did He do? He took off His outer clothing, wrapped a towel around His waist, and scrubbed the dirt and animal manure off the feet of the men who were about to abandon Him.
If you are leading a team, building a platform, or organizing a massive annual convention, the temptation is to act like a CEO. You want to delegate all the pain and stand on the stage. But Kingdom leadership is not about how many people serve you; it is about how many people you serve.
Authority in God's Kingdom is never given to elevate your status. It is given to you so you have enough leverage to lift someone else up. The higher you rise in influence, the lower you must bend in service.
Digging Deeper
This is the principle of Kenosis (Self-Emptying). Philippians 2 says Jesus "made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant." When you lead a major initiative, people will naturally try to hand you a crown.
They will praise your vision and your strategy. A mature leader takes the crown, lays it at the feet of Jesus, and picks up the towel instead. If your leadership doesn't regularly cost you your pride, you aren't leading like Christ.
Reflect on this: When was the last time you did a menial, unseen task for the people you lead? Do you feel "too important" to set up the chairs or troubleshoot a minor user issue? If you are too big to serve, you are too small to lead.
👣 Take a Step Action: The Unseen Service. Find a way to secretly serve someone on your team or in your family today. Do a chore that is technically "below your pay grade." Do not let them know it was you.
