"The manna ceased on the morrow after they had eaten of the old corn of the land." — Joshua 5:12 Imagine you have been receiving a government stipend every single morning for forty years. You wake up, open the door, and there it is — exactly what you need for the day.
You never had to plan. You never had to plant. You never had to store. The provision was miraculous, consistent, and daily. Then one morning you open the door — and there is nothing. The manna has stopped.
Your first reaction is panic. Has God abandoned me? Is this the end? But when you look around, you realise something stunning: you are standing in a land full of grain. The manna did not stop because God's provision stopped.
It stopped because you no longer needed it in that form. The wilderness miracle gave way to the harvest of the promised land. God always transitions His people from emergency provision to mature responsibility.
There are seasons of manna — supernatural, unexplainable supply that carries you through crisis. And then there are seasons of ploughing, planting, and eating from the land. Both are God's provision.
But immature believers only recognise God in the manna season. If the brook of miraculous breakthrough has dried up in your life, look around before you mourn. You may be standing in the promised land without realising it.
Digging Deeper
The Israelites' manna was "bread from heaven" — but it came with a restriction: you could not store it. It was designed to produce daily dependency, not long-term independence. The manna season trains the soul to trust moment by moment.
But there comes a time when God says: "Now till the ground. Now build. Now plan. Now steward." The mature disciple learns to recognise both modes of God's supply. Philippians 4:12 — "I have learned to be content in all circumstances… I have learned the secret of being filled and going hungry."
The key word is "learned." Contentment in both abundance and need is not instinctive — it is a school, and the ceasing of the manna is one of its most important lessons. 🪞 Reflect on this: Is there a supernatural provision in your life that has recently "dried up"?
Could it be a transition rather than an abandonment? Are you waiting for a manna-season miracle when God may be calling you to plant and cultivate in a new way? What would it look like to trust God in the season of "ploughing" as much as in the season of miraculous supply?
👣 Take a Step Action: The Transition Prayer Identify one area where you've been waiting for God to "drop something from heaven" that He may actually be asking you to cultivate through faithful effort.
Take one practical step in that direction today. Say: "Lord, teach me to recognise Your provision even when it doesn't look like yesterday's miracle. I trust You in the ploughing season."
