devotionExodus 6:3IWillKnowHisName

The Name They Had Not Known

Every new season reveals a new name. What is God showing you about Himself right now?

"I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, as God Almighty, but by my name the LORD I did not make myself known to them." God responds to Moses' complaint with a covenant renewal — and with a remarkable disclosure.

The patriarchs knew God as El Shaddai, God Almighty — the name that emphasised His power to fulfil promises to the powerless. But the name YHWH — the LORD — the name of covenantal intimacy, faithfulness, and personal presence in historical action — this dimension of who God is is now being fully revealed through what He is about to do in Egypt.

Every new act of God in history is, in a sense, a new revelation of a name — a fresh disclosure of a facet of His character that previous generations glimpsed but could not yet fully see. Abraham knew God as the One who provides.

Moses is being introduced to the God who delivers. The same God — but a deeper sight of who He is, made possible by a new moment in the unfolding story. The Exodus will teach the world something about God that creation and covenant alone could not.

When Moses delivers this message to the Israelites, they cannot hear it — their spirits are broken by cruel bondage. Suffering can make the best news inaudible. But God does not withdraw the word because the audience is too crushed to receive it.

He sends Moses to Pharaoh anyway. When people are too broken to hear grace, God acts in power so that eventually the demonstration will reach where the words could not.

Digging Deeper

The covenant structure of verses 6-8 is precise and formal: "I will bring you out… I will deliver you… I will redeem you… I will take you to be my people… I will be your God… I will bring you into the land."

Seven "I will" declarations — seven acts of divine commitment. God is not giving Israel a set of conditions to meet; He is listing what He Himself will accomplish on their behalf. The Exodus is not a joint project.

It is pure divine initiative. Paul connects this covenant language to the new covenant in : "They are Israelites, and to them belong the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises."

The seven "I wills" of Exodus 6 are the old covenant prototype of every New Testament promise: I will never leave you. I will make you a new creation. I will complete the good work I began in you. 🪞 Reflect on this • What new name — what new dimension of God's character — are you discovering through the specific season you are currently in?

• The Israelites could not hear Moses because of broken spirit. What conditions of weariness or discouragement make it hard for you to receive what God is saying right now? • The seven "I will" declarations are all God's action, not Israel's.

How does a grace-driven covenant change your relationship to performance and striving? 👣 Take a Step Collect Your "I Will" Promises Open your Bible and find three specific "I will" promises from God — statements of His commitment toward you.

Write them down. Over the next week, return to them daily as your anchor against fear or discouragement.

Prayer

Lord, I want to know You more fully — not just by Your power but by Your name. Show me in this season what the patriarchs could not yet see. Let the hardship become a deeper revelation of who You are.

Amen.
