When Abram was 99 years old, God appeared to him! God said, 'I am God Almighty. Walk close with Me and live for Me.' God was still keeping His promises after all those years.
God said, 'I am making a special agreement — a covenant — with you, Abram. I will give you so many children and grandchildren that they cannot be counted!' God's promise was still growing.
When God spoke, Abram fell flat on his face to the ground. That is what we call worship — when we show God with our whole body and heart how great He is. Then God kept on talking.
God said to Abram, 'I have made My covenant with you. You will be the father of many, many nations — not just one people, but nations all over the world!' What an amazing plan God had.
God gave Abram a brand new name: Abraham! His old name Abram meant 'high father,' but his new name Abraham means 'father of many nations.' When God gives you a new name, He is giving you a new purpose.
God promised Abraham, 'I will make you incredibly fruitful. Nations will come from you. Even kings will be among your descendants!' God's blessing on Abraham was bigger than Abraham could imagine.
God said this covenant was not just for Abraham — it was for Abraham's children and grandchildren and all their children, forever! God promised to be their God through all the generations to come.
God promised to give Abraham and all his descendants the land of Canaan forever. Abraham was living there as a foreigner, but one day it would truly be his family's home. And most of all, God promised: 'I will be their God.'
God told Abraham, 'You and your children and all the generations after you must keep this covenant.' God gives wonderful promises, and He also asks us to be faithful to Him in return.
God explained the sign of the covenant: every boy in Abraham's family was to be circumcised. This was the outward mark that showed they belonged to God and were part of His special people.
God said this special mark in the body would be a token — like a reminder — of the promise between Him and His people. Just as a ring reminds a married couple of their love, this mark reminded them of God's covenant.
God said that every baby boy should be circumcised when he was eight days old. This included every boy born into the family and every boy who joined the household — everyone was included in God's family.
Everyone who was part of Abraham's household must carry the mark of the covenant. This everlasting promise from God was written not only in words but in their bodies — a living reminder every day.
God said that anyone who refused the covenant sign was cutting himself off from God's people. Refusing the mark meant refusing the covenant — it was a serious choice to reject God's family.
God also gave Sarai a new name: Sarah! Her name still means 'princess,' but the change was a sign that her identity and her future were being renewed by God. A new name for a new chapter.
God promised to bless Sarah greatly! She would have a son, and from her would come nations and kings. God had a huge, beautiful purpose for Sarah — a woman who had waited so long.
When God said Sarah would have a baby, Abraham fell down and laughed with astonishment! 'I am nearly 100 and Sarah is 90!' he said in his heart. He could not imagine how it could be possible.
Abraham loved his son Ishmael very much. He said to God, 'Please, let Ishmael live in Your blessing!' Abraham cared for both his sons. God heard this heart cry of a father.
God said clearly, 'Yes — Sarah will have a son! Name him Isaac. My covenant will go through him and his children forever.' God was specific and sure. No doubt about it.
God said, 'I have heard your prayer for Ishmael. I will bless him! He will have twelve princes as his sons, and he will become a great nation.' God answered Abraham's prayer for his son.
God made it clear: 'My covenant goes through Isaac — the son Sarah will have next year at this very time.' God gave Abraham a date! The impossible was going to happen by this time next year.
When God had finished everything He wanted to say, He left and went up from Abraham. Abraham had been given new promises, a new name, and a new sign. Now it was time to act on what God had said.
That very same day — not the next day or next week — Abraham did everything God said. He gathered every male in his household and they all received the covenant mark. Abraham obeyed immediately and completely.
Abraham was 99 years old when he received the covenant mark himself. He led the way — he did not ask others to do something he was not willing to do himself. That is true leadership.
Ishmael was 13 years old when he received the covenant mark. He was old enough to understand what was happening. He too was included in Abraham's household and in the blessing God had promised.
On that same remarkable day, both Abraham and his son Ishmael were circumcised together. Father and son obeyed God side by side — a beautiful picture of a family following God together.
Every man in Abraham's household — whether born into the family or someone who had joined later — was circumcised that day. Every single one belonged. No one was left out of God's community.
