The promise of innumerable seed is the counterbalance to the land promise. Land and seed — place and people — are the two components of God's covenant with Abram. The comparison to 'dust of the earth' is vivid and specific: try to count the grains of dust, and that is how many descendants Abram will have. This promise will later be compared to stars (Genesis 15:5) and sand (Genesis 22:17).
Memory phrase: God's promises are bigger than we can imagine.
Talk about it: Abram had no children — and God was promising him as many descendants as the dust of the earth! What would you think if you were Abram hearing that?
Prayer: God, Your promises are so much bigger than I can imagine. Help me trust You even for the ones that seem impossible right now.
