Genesis 13:13

This parenthetical statement is the narrator's warning flag — posted here, before Lot's drift toward Sodom goes any further. The word 'exceedingly' intensifies the wickedness. The reader is meant to feel the alarm: Lot is heading toward something he cannot see clearly from where he is standing. This is the spiritual danger of making choices by outward appearance.

Memory phrase: Beautiful places can hide ugly dangers.

Talk about it: Lot chose the direction of Sodom because it looked beautiful. But the Bible says Sodom was very wicked. What are some ways to find out if a place or situation is truly good before you get too involved?

Prayer: God, give me wisdom to see beyond what looks appealing — to see what a place, a choice, or a friendship is truly like before I get too deep in.
